Finely Tuned Models Sacrifice Explanatory Depth

چکیده

It is commonly argued that an undesirable feature of a theoretical or phenomenological model salient observables are sensitive to values parameters in the model. But what sense it have such ‘fine-tuning’ (and hence underlying model)? In this paper, we argue fine-tuning can be interpreted as shortcoming explanatory capacity model: particular signals lack type depth. The aspect depth probe relates most closely sensitivity changes associated with models. support argument, develop schema—for (a certain class of) models arise broadly physical settings—that quantitatively explanations based on these We apply our schema two different settings which, within each setting, compare competing explanations. first setting involves for Euclidean nature spatial slices universe today: particular, explanation provided by big-bang early 1970s (where no inflationary period included) general cosmic inflation. second has more character, where goal infer from limited sequence data points, using maximum entropy techniques, probability distribution which drawn. both find analysis favors intuitively provides deeper observable(s) interest. thus provide account ‘theoretical virtues’ used settings—namely, and depth—and finely tuned sacrifice

How Finely Tuned is Supersymmetric Dark Matter ?

We introduce a quantification of the question in the title: the logarithmic sensitivity of the relic neutralino density Ωχh 2 to variations in input parameters such as the supersymmetric mass scales m0, m1/2 and A0, tan β and the top and bottom quark masses. In generic domains of the CMSSM parameter space with a relic density in the preferred range 0.1 ≤ Ωχh 2 ≤ 0.3, the sensitivities to all th...

Herpesvirus gB: A Finely Tuned Fusion Machine

Enveloped viruses employ a class of proteins known as fusogens to orchestrate the merger of their surrounding envelope and a target cell membrane. Most fusogens accomplish this task alone, by binding cellular receptors and subsequently catalyzing the membrane fusion process. Surprisingly, in herpesviruses, these functions are distributed among multiple proteins: the conserved fusogen gB, the co...

Dark Matter in the Finely Tuned Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model

We explore dark matter in the Finely Tuned Minimal Supersymmetric Standard model recently proposed by Arkani-Hamed and Dimopoulos. Relative to the MSSM, there are fewer particles at freezeout, so the calculation of the relic abundance simplifies. Similarly, the predictions for direct detection of the dark matter sharpen. There is a large region of mixed bino–higgsino dark matter where the light...

Grueneberg ganglion neurons are finely tuned cold sensors.

The Grueneberg ganglion is a newly appreciated nasal subsystem with neural connections to the olfactory forebrain, but its functional role has not been well defined. Here, we assess whether Grueneberg ganglion neurons (GGNs) function as thermosensors. By investigating the effect of acute temperature changes on the cytosolic Ca(2+) concentration of genetically labeled mouse GGNs (either gender),...

Synthetic Graph Generation from Finely-Tuned Temporal Constraints

Large-scale graphs are at the core of a plethora of modern applications such as social networks, transportation networks, or the Semantic Web. Such graphs are naturally evolving over time, which makes particularly challenging graph processing tasks e.g., graph mining. To be able to realize rigorous empirical evaluations of research ideas, the graph processing community needs finely-tuned genera...
